This April, discover the stories that shaped Decatur, Alabama during our Free Historic April Walking Tours , held every Saturday as part of a statewide tourism initiative celebrating Alabama’s history. Each week offers a different themed tour through downtown, giving visitors and locals alike the chance to explore the city’s rich heritage one step at a time. Beginning at 10 a.m. each Saturday , these guided tours stroll along historic 2nd Avenue, Bank Street, Historic homes and throughout downtown Decatur , highlighting everything from early settlement and Victorian architecture to fascinating local legends and notable landmarks. Led by passionate local historians and storytellers, each tour brings Decatur’s past to life in a fun and engaging way. Tour Details 📅 Every Saturday in April ⏰ 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. 💲 Free and open to the public 👟 Family-friendly, easy walking routes, and ADA accessible 🐕 Dog-Friendly, Must be leashed April 4 – Historic Downtown Decatur Tour Kick off the series on April 4 with a guided walk through the historic streets of downtown Decatur led by local historian Suzanne Langdon . This tour explores the city’s early development such as the historic Union Train Depot and the people and places that helped shape Decatur into the vibrant community it is today. As you walk along Bank Street and 2nd Avenue, Suzanne will share fascinating stories and historical insights at some of downtown’s most recognizable landmarks. This tour will begin at the Historic Union Train Depot. April 11 – Old Town Historic District Tour On April 11 , take a meaningful walk through Decatur’s Historic Old Town District , the city’s original settlement dating back to the 1820s when it was known as Rhodes Ferry Landing . Once a vital river and rail hub, the area later became a thriving African American community following the Civil War. Led by Peggy Towns , this tour explores Old Town’s deep cultural roots and its significance in civil rights history. Guests will hear stories about early Black-owned businesses, historic churches, and community leaders, including the city’s first Black Alderman. The tour will also include a look at the CEOTA Civil Rights Museum , currently undergoing renovations, and other important landmarks in the district. The Old Town tour begins at the Decatur Scottsboro Boys Museum on Sycamore Street. April 18 – Downtown Crime & Mystery Tour History takes a darker turn on April 18 during the Downtown Crime Tour led by local historian and storyteller John Allison . This thrilling walk through Decatur’s past explores infamous crimes, unsolved mysteries, Prohibition-era misdeeds, and dramatic courtroom showdowns that once made headlines. Guests will stroll past historic buildings and hidden alleyways while hearing captivating tales of scandal and intrigue from Decatur’s past. With engaging storytelling and deep local insight, this tour offers a fascinating look at the city’s more mysterious side—perfect for true crime enthusiasts and curious history buffs alike. The Crime Tour begins at the Morgan County Archives. April 25 – Historic Homes of Old Decatur Tour To wrap up the month, join us on April 25 for a walk through the beautiful Old Decatur Historic District , one of Alabama’s most treasured neighborhoods. Known for its beautifully preserved Victorian and early 20th-century homes , this district offers a glimpse into Decatur’s architectural elegance and the families who built the community. As you wander shaded streets lined with historic homes, you’ll hear stories of craftsmanship, community traditions, and the generations who once called these houses home. This tour will begin at the Carnegie Visual Arts Center.

Each winter, Decatur becomes a gathering place for nature lovers, artists, families, and birding enthusiasts as we celebrate one of our region’s most remarkable natural events—the return of the sandhill cranes. The Festival of the Cranes returns January 9–11, 2026 , bringing a full weekend of free programs, performances, and hands-on experiences to venues across Decatur. From late fall through early spring, thousands of sandhill cranes migrate to North Alabama, making Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge one of the best places in the country to witness their graceful flight and unforgettable calls. Festival programming offers visitors a deeper understanding of these incredible birds through expert-led talks, storytelling, and interactive experiences that celebrate both the cranes and the landscape they depend on.

These annual celebrations mark the start of the holiday season, spreading joy and togetherness to all who attend. Here’s a look at this year’s lineup of Christmas parades throughout Morgan County: Trinity Christmas Parade Saturday, December 6th at 10:00 AM Start your day with holiday spirit as the Trinity community lines the streets for a morning of fun, family, and festive floats. Priceville’s Annual Shelia Smith Christmas Parade Saturday, December 6th at 3:00 PM Presented by the City of Priceville Parks and Recreation Department, this cherished tradition honors the late Shelia Smith and her legacy of community pride. Eva Christmas Parade Saturday, December 8th at 7:00 PM Bundle up and enjoy the twinkle of lights at night as Eva’s Christmas parade rolls through town—an event that always delights both kids and adults. Decatur’s “Lights, Camera, Christmas” Parade Monday, December 8th at 6:00 PM Hosted by the Young Professionals of Decatur, this year’s theme brings the magic of the movies to life! Expect creative floats, bright lights, and plenty of cinematic holiday flair. Falkville Christmas Parade Tuesday, December 9th at 3:00 PM This afternoon parade is packed with small-town charm, classic cars, and festive community spirit. Hartselle Christmas Parade Thursday, December 11th at 7:00 PM Presented by the Kiwanis Club of Hartselle, this beloved parade is one of the county’s largest, drawing visitors from near and far to celebrate under the glow of holiday lights. From morning marches to sparkling evening parades, each celebration showcases the heart and hospitality of Morgan County. Gather your family, grab a cup of hot cocoa, and make your way to one—or all—of these festive parades. There’s no better way to kick off the holiday season than right here at home.

Big news for country music fans: Rock the South, one of the South’s most beloved music festivals, is making a major move. Beginning in 2026 , the three-day summer tradition will take place at its brand-new, permanent home— The Fields at Decatur —from June 11–13, 2026 . For more than 14 years, Rock the South has grown into a can’t-miss event, drawing fans from across the region to celebrate music, community, and Southern culture. Now, with its move to Decatur (just south of Huntsville and an hour from Birmingham), the festival is stepping into a bold new chapter. This relocation marks the first time Peachtree Entertainment—the team behind Rock the South—will fully own its festival grounds. That means long-term investments to enhance comfort, convenience, and fan experiences for years to come. The new site promises: 150+ acres of usable space for easy flow and bigger crowds. Expanded campgrounds with engineered drainage, designed to keep the fun going rain or shine. More shade and cooling zones to beat the Alabama heat. A reimagined VIP area plus new fan hangout spaces. A second stage presented by Raised Rowdy , doubling the music and energy. Nathan Baugh, CEO of Peachtree Entertainment, summed it up: “Rock the South has always been about more than music; it’s about tradition, community, and celebrating the South at its best.
