The air is a little cooler and the colors are a little brighter..... it's finally fall in Decatur!

There is something about when the seasons' change that brings Decatur to life! When the beautiful red, yellow, and orange leaves start to appear everything gets a little cozier. If you are looking to enjoy the Autumnal ambiance look no further! We have compiled a list of some of the best things to do in Morgan County this fall season! Whether you like to pick pumpkins at a local farm or take a walk through the trails Decatur and Morgan County has it all.

Visit a local pumpkin patch

If you and your family are looking for an adventure, check out one of our local pumpkin patches! You can stroll through the fields and find the perfect pumpkin for you. From large orange ones to beautiful white, or maybe you like more of a funky pumpkin, you will have plenty to choose from. A trip to the pumpkin patch is the perfect way to get you in the Fall spirit! Learn more about the pumpkin patches in Morgan County below:


Gullion Farms

(701 Peck Hollow Road, Somerville AL)


Open Saturdays in October. 10AM-4PM. Admission is $10 per person and kids under school age get in free.


There is so many fun fall activities at Gullion Farms! What all is included with admission you may ask? You can milk a cow, or go on a relaxing hay ride! Meet animals at the petting zoo, or be courageous sliding down their huge slide. You can soar to new heights while jumping in their hay jump. Or you can get lost in the hay maze or corn pit. Gullion Farms also offers fishing and egg gathering. If you have children they will love the Gullion Farms playground.  Or maybe they would enjoy one of their different stations including a slingshot station, a roping station, and a dressing a scarecrow station.


Pony rides and horse rides for an additional price. Pumpkin prices vary based on size.

Home cooking is available for purchase! Cornbread, pintos, greens, bbq, pear relish, burgers, nachos, and more.

Hidden Rivers Farm

Hidden Rivers Farm is open for the Fall season: September 16, 2022 through October 30, 2022. Come play Fridays from 4pm-8pm, Saturdays and Sundays 10am-7pm.


Admission:

Season Passes:$30 per person

Day Passes:

Fridays: $8 per person online or at the gate

Saturdays and Sundays: $9 per person online or $10 at the gate

​Children 2 and under get in free!


What all is included with Admission? You can hike through the nature trails, climb a tire mountain, or feel the breeze in the swings!

You can get lost in the themed maze or take a piece of autumn home with you by picking your own pumpkin from the pumpkin patch.

You can experience a bit of farm life with animal encounters and even have the chance to ride a pony. You may also want to pop on into the corn pit for some fall fun! There are lots of fun play areas set up around the farm for more opportunities for fun, imagination, and play!

 

If you are a football fan you don’t have to miss a second of it this season! They have a tailgate tent with 2 tv's, cornhole, and seating areas. It is the perfect place to enjoy a day of tailgating while the kids play in a safe area!


When you get hungry they have food and grills. Buy lunch or bring it with you so you can stay and play the day away! Grills are also available for rental!

Attend a fall festival

A Fall festival is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the season! Autumnal sweets and treats, beautiful decorations, and live music, what more could you want? Decatur and Morgan County will have some amazing fall festivals upcoming this season and we wanted to highlight a few for you!


Falkville Fall Festival

(October 8th, 2022)


The town of Falkville is throwing its annual Fall Festival! It starts at 7:00 AM with a Pancake breakfast at the fire station. Then you can join in the ColorMe Downtown 5K Run/Walk starting at 8:00 AM. After the 5K, from 8:00 AM- 3:00 PM there will be vendors, arts and crafts, inflatables, a mechanical bull, and activities for children. Or you can attend the car/ tractor show starting at 9:00 AM. There will also be live music during the festival so make sure to stop by and check it out!


Alabama Gourd Festival

(October 14th-15th, 2022)


The Alabama Gourd Festival is an art show held at the Sparkman Civic Center in Hartselle, Alabama. Enjoy the beautiful works of art made from gourds. Find that unique gift for someone special on your list or something for yourself. You will find plenty of raw gourds, supplies, and tools for purchase. Children can decorate their own ornamental gourd for free. The whole family will enjoy touring the fabulous ribbon competition exhibit room. Learn something new as gourd artists demonstrate their art techniques, or take a class from an experienced gourd artist. The Alabama Gourd Festival is free to attend!




Take a stroll around looking at the beautiful fall colors

The leaves are changing and Decatur is absolutely stunning! If you like to admire nature's beauty there are plenty of opportunities for you! Take a walk around the Point Mallard Trails, or visit the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge to get a glimpse of all the beautiful fall colors. The weather is perfect for a walk or run so take advantage of it now. You can even take your bike for a nice ride around town. Enjoy the season's cheapest activity by appreciating the area around you.

When it gets a little colder, you need something to warm you up. Decatur's local coffee shops have the perfect solution! A delicious hot cup of coffee hits the spot, especially in the Fall. This April, discover the stories that shaped Decatur, Alabama during our Free Historic April Walking Tours , held every Saturday as part of a statewide tourism initiative celebrating Alabama’s history. Each week offers a different themed tour through downtown, giving visitors and locals alike the chance to explore the city’s rich heritage one step at a time. Beginning at 10 a.m. each Saturday , these guided tours stroll along historic 2nd Avenue, Bank Street, Historic homes and throughout downtown Decatur , highlighting everything from early settlement and Victorian architecture to fascinating local legends and notable landmarks. Led by passionate local historians and storytellers, each tour brings Decatur’s past to life in a fun and engaging way. Tour Details 📅 Every Saturday in April ⏰ 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. 💲 Free and open to the public 👟 Family-friendly, easy walking routes, and ADA accessible 🐕 Dog-Friendly, Must be leashed April 4 – Historic Downtown Decatur Tour Kick off the series on April 4 with a guided walk through the historic streets of downtown Decatur led by local historian Suzanne Langdon . This tour explores the city’s early development such as the historic Union Train Depot and the people and places that helped shape Decatur into the vibrant community it is today. As you walk along Bank Street and 2nd Avenue, Suzanne will share fascinating stories and historical insights at some of downtown’s most recognizable landmarks. This tour will begin at the Historic Union Train Depot. April 11 – Old Town Historic District Tour On April 11 , take a meaningful walk through Decatur’s Historic Old Town District , the city’s original settlement dating back to the 1820s when it was known as Rhodes Ferry Landing . Once a vital river and rail hub, the area later became a thriving African American community following the Civil War. Led by Peggy Towns , this tour explores Old Town’s deep cultural roots and its significance in civil rights history. Guests will hear stories about early Black-owned businesses, historic churches, and community leaders, including the city’s first Black Alderman. The tour will also include a look at the CEOTA Civil Rights Museum , currently undergoing renovations, and other important landmarks in the district. The Old Town tour begins at the Decatur Scottsboro Boys Museum on Sycamore Street. April 18 – Downtown Crime & Mystery Tour History takes a darker turn on April 18 during the Downtown Crime Tour led by local historian and storyteller John Allison . This thrilling walk through Decatur’s past explores infamous crimes, unsolved mysteries, Prohibition-era misdeeds, and dramatic courtroom showdowns that once made headlines. Guests will stroll past historic buildings and hidden alleyways while hearing captivating tales of scandal and intrigue from Decatur’s past. With engaging storytelling and deep local insight, this tour offers a fascinating look at the city’s more mysterious side—perfect for true crime enthusiasts and curious history buffs alike. The Crime Tour begins at the Morgan County Archives. April 25 – Historic Homes of Old Decatur Tour To wrap up the month, join us on April 25 for a walk through the beautiful Old Decatur Historic District , one of Alabama’s most treasured neighborhoods. Known for its beautifully preserved Victorian and early 20th-century homes , this district offers a glimpse into Decatur’s architectural elegance and the families who built the community. As you wander shaded streets lined with historic homes, you’ll hear stories of craftsmanship, community traditions, and the generations who once called these houses home. This tour will begin at the Carnegie Visual Arts Center.

Big news for country music fans: Rock the South, one of the South’s most beloved music festivals, is making a major move. Beginning in 2026 , the three-day summer tradition will take place at its brand-new, permanent home— The Fields at Decatur —from June 11–13, 2026 . For more than 14 years, Rock the South has grown into a can’t-miss event, drawing fans from across the region to celebrate music, community, and Southern culture. Now, with its move to Decatur (just south of Huntsville and an hour from Birmingham), the festival is stepping into a bold new chapter. This relocation marks the first time Peachtree Entertainment—the team behind Rock the South—will fully own its festival grounds. That means long-term investments to enhance comfort, convenience, and fan experiences for years to come. The new site promises: 150+ acres of usable space for easy flow and bigger crowds. Expanded campgrounds with engineered drainage, designed to keep the fun going rain or shine. More shade and cooling zones to beat the Alabama heat. A reimagined VIP area plus new fan hangout spaces. A second stage presented by Raised Rowdy , doubling the music and energy.
