How Decatur-Morgan County Tourism Is Thanking the Front Line of Our Hospitality Industry!
When visitors arrive in Decatur‑Morgan County, some of their most memorable moments happen at a restaurant table — a warm hello, a friendly server, a meal that tastes like home. Those moments shape whether a traveler stays and explores or simply passes through. Decatur‑Morgan County Tourism created Spread the Bread to celebrate and support the restaurant workers who make our community unforgettable.
In recent years, more families have chosen to eat at home to save money — a shift that's had a real and lasting impact on the take-home pay of our restaurant hosts, waiters, and waitresses. At the same time, our tourism office has seen firsthand just how much weight a single dining experience can carry. Every visitor who comes through Decatur Morgan County will, at some point, look for a place to eat. That interaction — the service, the hospitality, the way they're made to feel — can be the deciding factor in whether a traveler decides to return.
Restaurant workers are, in many ways, the front line of our visitor experience. Spread the Spread was created to make sure they know it.
There's another shift happening in the industry that adds to the challenge: fewer front-line workers are taking home cash tips at the end of a shift. For many servers who've built their budgets around having cash on hand for everyday expenses, this change has made an already demanding job even harder.
Spread the Bread brings together community leaders, residents and hospitality professionals to show tangible support for the people serving our city, one restaurant at a time.Here's how it comes together each month:
• When: The group meets every 4th Wednesday of the month.
• Where: A restaurant is randomly drawn out of a hat, so the love gets spread across our entire community.
• Who: An invitation goes out through the tourism office's circle of connections, but the gathering is open to anyone in our community who wants to join and we ask that circle of influence to “spread” the word. This is an open invitation, and everyone is welcome!
• What to bring: Just come ready to buy your own meal, and bring a $10 cash bill to add to the group tip pool.
We gather, break bread together, and get the chance to build closer connections across our community. At the end of the meal, we bless our server with the pooled cash tip and a handwritten note, signed by all, thanking them for showing up to work and for everything they do to shape the visitor experience in Decatur Morgan County.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive. More than once, servers have been moved to tears — grateful for the unexpected boost in their shift. We've met servers who were in real need of a blessing that day: help paying a bill, buying diapers, covering an unexpected expense. But more than the money itself, what servers say they appreciate most is simply being seen.
With more than 200 restaurants across Decatur and Morgan County—nearly half locally owned—restaurant workers are a vital part of our economy and the experience visitors enjoy. Spread the Bread is our small way of saying thank you to the people who make this community worth visiting and returning to.
