Riding the Waves of Community Spirit at the 2024 Dragon Boat Races at Point Mallard Park

The annual dragon boat races will kick off on May 11th for a great cause!

Every year, the banks of the Tennessee River come alive with the rhythmic beat of drums and the vibrant colors of traditional Hong Kong-style dragon boats. The Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation Dragon Boat Race and Festival is more than just a sporting event; it's a celebration of community, camaraderie, and centuries-old tradition.

Each year teams of 22 individuals, fueled by adrenaline and a sense of unity, come together to propel a 46-feet-long dragon boat through the water. At the helm is a drummer, setting the pace with every beat, while rowers synchronize their strokes to glide the boat forward. Behind them stands the steerer, guiding the vessel with precision. Races like these are always unpredictable. You will have to watch to see who will be victorious!

What are the races for?

What sets the Dragon Boat festival apart is the sense of community that permeates every aspect of the event. Participants hail from all corners of the Decatur & Morgan County, representing businesses, organizations, and families who come together for a day of spirited competition. But beyond the thrill of the race itself, there's a deeper purpose at play: supporting the vital work of the hospital foundation in serving the healthcare needs of the community. The Dragon Boat Races are organized by the Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation and it serves as a crucial fundraiser to support the foundation's mission of enhancing healthcare services in the community. Since its establishment in 1983, the foundation has played a pivotal role in fostering relationships and garnering philanthropic support for Decatur Morgan Hospital. Funds raised through events like the Dragon Boat Races have enabled the foundation to invest in state-of-the-art technology, improve facilities, provide scholarships for employees, and expand much-needed healthcare services. By participating in or supporting the Dragon Boat Races, individuals not only engage in a day of thrilling competition but also contribute directly to the betterment of healthcare in the Decatur community, ensuring that quality medical care remains accessible to all who need it.

The Dragon Boat Race and Festival isn't just about the races; it's a full day of festivities for the whole family. Spectators gather on the Point Mallard Aquatic Center Beach, enjoying food, music, and entertainment while cheering on their favorite teams. Kids can partake in activities and games, adding to the atmosphere of joy and celebration.

Big news for country music fans: Rock the South, one of the South’s most beloved music festivals, is making a major move. Beginning in 2026 , the three-day summer tradition will take place at its brand-new, permanent home— The Fields at Decatur —from June 11–13, 2026 . For more than 14 years, Rock the South has grown into a can’t-miss event, drawing fans from across the region to celebrate music, community, and Southern culture. Now, with its move to Decatur (just south of Huntsville and an hour from Birmingham), the festival is stepping into a bold new chapter. This relocation marks the first time Peachtree Entertainment—the team behind Rock the South—will fully own its festival grounds. That means long-term investments to enhance comfort, convenience, and fan experiences for years to come. The new site promises: 150+ acres of usable space for easy flow and bigger crowds. Expanded campgrounds with engineered drainage, designed to keep the fun going rain or shine. More shade and cooling zones to beat the Alabama heat. A reimagined VIP area plus new fan hangout spaces. A second stage presented by Raised Rowdy , doubling the music and energy. Nathan Baugh, CEO of Peachtree Entertainment, summed it up: “Rock the South has always been about more than music; it’s about tradition, community, and celebrating the South at its best. The Fields at Decatur gives us the space to do it right—and to make even bigger moments than ever before.”

Decatur, Alabama, is gearing up for a vibrant and meaningful Juneteenth celebration this year, honoring the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and recognizing the enduring struggle for equality.
