Lillie Beth Warner • August 4, 2022

Everyday is a good day for a bike ride!

If you or someone you know loves to put the pedal to the medal and explore via a bicycle........ we have some great news for you! Throughout the city of Decatur, there is a 14.7-mile bike/walking trail that allows you to explore the scenic views, historic downtown, recreation centers, and beautiful landscapes across the city. This Trail is called the Dr. Bill Sims Biking and Running/Walking Trail! The Dr. Bill Sims Trail embodies a rich diversity of terrain as well. It begins as asphalt, then transfers to on-street transport, and merges into a shady, well-maintained gravel trail over smooth terrain in our local parks. This trail is a hit amongst many recreation groups and is a perfect way to exercise with a view!

The Dr. Bill Sims Trail was made in Decatur to offer a clear and safe way for locals and visitors to enjoy all that the city has to offer. The trail itself is marked with official signage letting cyclists, walkers, and runners know the location and distance of the path they are on. There is plenty of parking for the trail at any of its entry points.  Along the trail are some of Decatur's top tourist attractions!

Discover Decatur.... here are 5 must-see spots on the Dr. Bill Sims trail!

1.) Rhodes Ferry Park

Rhodes Ferry Park is one of many parks operated by the city of Decatur. The name honors the original name of the city, Rhodes Ferry, named for a landowner who operated a ferry across the Tennessee River in the 1810s. The park is also notable as a departure point for the Cherokee Indian Trail of Tears. The park features a playground, picnic facilities, and beautiful views along the river.

2.) Point Mallard Park

Point Mallard Park offers a variety of options for recreation. From baseball to soccer fields to tennis courts, Point Mallard has it all. One of the best parts of the park is the stunning landscape of the winding trail. Point Mallard is located right by the Tennessee River and makes an amazing backdrop for your next bike ride.

3.) Dancy- Polk House

Another great stop on the Dr. Bill Sims trail is the Dancy–Polk House. The Dancy-Polk House is a historic residence in Decatur, Alabama. The house was built in 1829 for Colonel William Francis Dancy, an early settler in the area. It is the oldest building in Decatur, and one of only four to survive the Civil War.

4.) Historic Train Depot

The Historic Depot is a fantastic place to stop along the trail! The Depot itself has been transformed into a Railroad Museum that even includes a model train set of the city of Decatur! This freshly remodeled building offers a wealth of information on the Railroad industry along with excellent views as trains pass by.

5.) The Steamboat Bill Memorial Bridge

The Dr. Bill Sims Trail goes right under the infamous "Decatur Bridge"! This is a super cool spot to check out to see the bridge like you never have before! This is a great spot to admire the Tennessee River and leads directly into Old Town Decatur.

Happy Trails........

Decatur, Alabama, is gearing up for a vibrant and meaningful Juneteenth celebration this year, honoring the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and recognizing the enduring struggle for equality. This was nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Black Texans began celebrating the day in 1866, and it has evolved into a widely observed holiday. The Juneteenth holiday is a day for reflection, education, and community celebration. Want to celebrate Juneteenth?
